Your First Orthodontist Visit

Our objective is to make sure your visits with us will be pleasant and informative.

Your first appointment is an INITIAL EXAMINATION.  During this visit, Dr. Ziaja will review the health history and perform a detailed facial growth and orthodontic evaluation to determine if any orthodontic needs are present.  Dr. Ziaja will discuss his findings, the necessary treatment, and the most appropriate timing for treatment.  The proper time to begin treatment depends on the severity of the problem.  Some people should be treated at a young age to intercept problems before they develop or become more difficult to correct.  Others can wait until adolescence or adulthood.  Dr. Ziaja has the proper training and experience to determine the best age for treatment with the least amount of time and expense.  If it is determined this is not the best time to start treatment, we will then begin the OBSERVATION process for periodic re-examinations so that growth and development can be monitored until treatment is indicated.

Please assist us by providing the following information at the time of your first visit:

Please alert the office if you have a medical condition that may be of concern.

Diagnostic Records & Treatment Planning

If treatment is indicated, you will be scheduled for diagnostic records. These painless diagnostic procedures usually consists of study models, diagnostic photographs and orthodontic x-rays. These records enable Dr. Ziaja to make a thorough evaluation about which treatment option is right for you.  Since we do not want you to feel rushed or pressured, Dr. Ziaja will review your treatment options and plan at a subsequent appointment.  We are committed to delivering the best possible service in order for you to achieve your orthodontic objectives.

The next appointment, the CONSULTATION, will involve a detailed discussion of the orthodontic problem and the proposed treatment.  The anticipated length of treatment and financial arrangements (typically a down payment and monthly installments) will also be discussed.  This is a very important and educational experience.  It is when you learn about and have an opportunity to provide valuable input regarding the final plan of treatment.

Successive Visits

Periodic visits are an important part of orthodontic treatment. Generally, Dr. Ziaja will want to see you every 6 to 8 weeks to check your progress and make adjustments to your braces. During this time, you will need to keep appointments, follow instructions, eat nutritiously and practice good oral hygiene. Also continue to visit your dentist regularly.

Once your braces are removed, retainers are utilized to hold your teeth in their new positions until your bone, gums and muscles adapt to the new teeth positions. The retention period is an important part of your overall treatment and should not be neglected!

Length of Treatment

Braces may be on between 6 months to 30 months or longer depending on the age of the patient, the severity of the problem, the patient’s cooperation and the degree of movement needed.

Dental Care

Before any orthodontic treatment, your family dentist should make certain that all cavities have been treated and the health of your gums and underlying bone are free of periodontal disease.

Your family dentist should also schedule routine cleaning and cavity checkup visits during your orthodontic care. We would like to reinforce the need to keep your regular visits with your family dentist because we are only an aid to your family dentist, not a replacement.

Please contact our office at Macomb Office Phone Number 586-247-6453 if you have any questions. The timing of your treatment is very important. You or your child may or may not be ready for treatment. Therefore, a consultation will allow us to better understand your needs.
